Mekong Training Center

Mỹ Tho City, Vietnam

Mekong Training Center

The Mekong Training Center is a purpose-built facility for professional education and community learning in the heart of Mỹ Tho City. Designed to serve both corporate training programmes and public skills development, it is a building conceived as an investment in the region's human capital.

Brief & Context

The client, a regional education and workforce development organisation, required a facility that could host short-course training programmes, professional workshops, and community seminars. The brief called for flexible, multi-purpose training rooms, support spaces for instructors and staff, and a welcoming public entrance that would signal the building's civic purpose to the surrounding neighbourhood.

Located on a corner site in central Mỹ Tho, the building sits within a mixed-use urban fabric of shophouses, small businesses, and community facilities. The design needed to be confident enough to establish a clear institutional presence, while remaining approachable and connected to its street context.

Design Approach

Z.FSO organised the programme across four levels. The ground floor is given over entirely to public life: a generous entrance hall, a reception and information desk, a café open to the street, and a small exhibition space for community events and displays. This level is designed to be active and welcoming at all hours, generating energy and footfall that reinforces the building's role as a community anchor.

The upper three floors house the training programme. Six classrooms of varying capacity, ranging from intimate rooms for 12 participants to a main lecture hall seating 80, are arranged around a central circulation core. Operable partitions between adjacent rooms allow two spaces to be combined for larger sessions, giving the facility significant operational flexibility without the cost of dedicated large-format rooms.

Facade & Climate

The building's facades respond directly to their solar orientation. The north and south elevations, which carry the main glazing — are shaded by a continuous brise-soleil of precast concrete fins, their depth calibrated to admit diffuse daylight while blocking direct sun. The east and west faces, more vulnerable to morning and afternoon heat gain, are treated with a tighter screen of perforated metal panels that filter light and provide a secondary layer of thermal protection.

Internally, all training rooms are naturally ventilated through high-level operable louvres, with mechanical ventilation available as a supplement during peak heat periods. The result is a building that is comfortable to occupy for long training sessions without dependence on energy-intensive cooling systems.

Materials & Character

The material palette draws from the local building tradition of the Mekong Delta: exposed concrete structure, locally sourced brick infill, and timber louvre blades at key internal openings. These materials were selected not for stylistic reasons but for their durability, their thermal performance, and their ability to age gracefully in a humid tropical climate with minimal maintenance.

Internal finishes are deliberately straightforward, painted plaster, polished concrete floors, and acoustic timber panels on classroom ceilings. The intention was to create spaces that are calm and distraction-free: environments that place the learning experience, not the architecture, at the centre.

Outcome

The Mekong Training Center opened in late 2023 and reached full programme capacity within its first quarter of operation. For Z.FSO, the project represents a commitment to architecture that serves the public good, buildings that invest in communities, support human development, and endure well beyond the moment of their completion.
